John Allen Rodgers (Jack), 86, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017 in Fairfax, Virginia. John was born December 6, 1930 to John A. Rodgers, Sr. & Grace (Hamer) Rodgers in Bairdford Township, PA, the youngest of 4 children. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
Jack met the love of his life, Mary Claus, in college at a square dance. After graduation, Jack joined the Navy, and soon afterward, he and Mary were married in 1953. They moved to Italy for 2 years while he was in the Navy, and then returned to Norfolk, VA. After the service, Jack started his career as an engineer for Melpar, and later joined the civil service division of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Washington D.C.
Jack was a self-taught musician and kept his family entertained playing the piano, guitar, accordion, banjo and fiddle. He enjoyed collecting fiddles and refurbishing them.
Jack is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary; his three daughters and son-in-laws: Linda and Roy Loehr of Chesapeake, VA ; Mary Lou and Wayne Mortimer of Virginia Beach, VA; and, Shirley and Michael Harkness of Fairfax, VA. His grandchildren Aaron and Timothy Loehr; Katie (Andy) Bourassa; Laura Neser; Chris and Paul Mortimer; Heather (Jason) Renard; Kim, Lisa and Michael Harkness. His great-grandchildren Patrick and Hugo Bourassa, Eleanor Renard and Tanzen Loehr. Jack was predeceased by his grandson Peter Loehr. Jack is also survived by his sister, Agnes Moss.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday, June 12, 2017 at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 West Maple Ave, Vienna, Virginia.
A funeral service to honor Jack will be held Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 11:00 am at St. Mark Catholic Church, 9970 Vale Road, Vienna, Virginia. A reception will immediately follow the service at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark Catholic Church or the American Heart Association.
